Chris books a catfish trip every February with me in search of big blues and some for the dinner table. We have been talking for a few days about if the weather was going to allow us to sneak our trip in with a good chance at a trophy. I haven`t been able to be on the water since Monday because of our weather. I told him I had some good fish located Monday, but that`s a really long time for a pattern to hold.
The wind was supposed to blow decently from the south this morning with rain showers and then make a shift around noon to a hard north wind and dropping temps. We decided to put the top up and fish this morning. Y`all the wind was non existence and a heavy fog and drizzle made navigating sketchy. We started out looking around where I had fish Monday. We had a few and decided to give it a try. We caught a few, but the fish were just not the size we were looking for and the bite was light.
We decided to make a move to another area of the lake, but keep the same pattern in mind. We graphed for about ten minutes and located a herd of trophy blues sitting in the soft mud on a slight bottom hardness change. We sat up the best we could with zero wind. We had one fish pull down with that non aggressive trophy blue signature bite and then drop it. We let the bait set there for another half hour and then magic happened. The same signature bite and drop....then she picked it back up committed. Holden raced to the rod like a champ and reeled down on it. She had the rod buckled down in the rod holder and Holden needed a little help getting it out and in a fighting position. For a ten year old, he fought that fish like a champ and followed instructions well. I knew it was a good one when he was battling her, but really didn`t realize how special it was until she surfaced.
I`ve had lots of blue catfish on my boat and some really special fish, but this 83.8 pounder will be hard to top.
Holden caught his fish on a Meathunter Boss Hog and named his fish, Piggy. Promo code Lutke15 to get 15% off at www.meathunterrods.com

Oh how crazy January and February in Northeast Oklahoma is such a roller coaster of weather and fishing! January and February are some great big fish months! The pics on this post are of one customer who has fished with me every year since I went full time guiding in between fronts in January or February. We`ve caught big fish on about every pattern and area of lakes over the years. We`ve never caught a fish over 30 pounds in the same area ever. They were on the boat Monday, and we tried lots of different areas and patterns trying not to break our big fish streak. We decided to fish one more area as we headed in and were talking about this being the worst trip they`ve ever taken with me. (We had plenty of eating sized fish, but just hadn`t gotten the picture fish we wanted.) On the way to that area, I had an idea and changed our course. I marked a few good fish on Lowrance SideScan and we set up on them to give it 20 minutes. It was pretty close to that 20 minute mark when magic happened. Brian got his picture fish and we all had smiles. January and February can be tough. We aren`t able to be on the water as much because of high winds, cold temps, and unsafe conditions so patterning the fish and staying on the fish is much more difficult and stressful as a guide. The magic moments make it all worth it though! Catfishing will stay good all the way into May. Right now some fish are shallow, but many of our fish are deep in channels or near them. Deep flats have also been good dragging planer boards. If you want numbers and not after size, during the shad spawn in April and May can be fantastic for fast action shallow water catfishing.

Monty and David wanted to learn more about catching catfish with a rod and reel. Monty jug fishes and David usually fishes from the bank. We fished four areas and patterns. Shallow did not produce, but the other three patterns were productive. Playing the wind shift was spit on for the highest number caught. We caught fish as shallow as 22ft and as deep as 36ft deep on fresh cut bait. Monty was asking about the Meat Hunter Rods Boss Hogs and I told him about the discount code, Lutke15, for fifteen percent off.

Brad took Greg out slinging crappie in the boat yesterday at Kaw. I was on Oologah and it was a super tough bite for us. We caught some, but we had to earn every single one. It was the open up the tackle box kind of day. Brad didn`t even have to consider changing baits. Their action was great. Some roamers were out there, but the fish were more on brush than they have been. The 80 degree weather was nice!

Our Oklahoma water turns to ice on our area lakes almost every January at some point, so my wife and I took advantage of and took off for a warmer weather cruise vacation. We started out the trip catching snook in San Juan then visited St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Maarten, St. Kitts, and Barbados.
Luckily we timed it about right and came back to much warmer weather.

It`s been a whirlwind crazy week, but super fun and rewarding. I`ve been having some boat issues and Dominic is being superdad raising twins, so Tyson and I had pretty much decided not to fish the Twisted Cat Outdoors on Lake Ray Hubbard. Then a great friend and colleague, Terry Nathan Terry asked if we`d fish it with him.
Some know him as Brother Terry or BT. We met years ago fishing against each other at white bass tournaments when we lived the DFW area. He and some other friends convinced me to give guiding a try on the side while I was a school teacher. Terry actually sent me the first two trips I ran.
I went down and fished with him Tuesday and Wednesday. Neither of us had ever been on Hubbard. We caught some fish both days, but nothing great. We were severely handicapped on scouting because of the intense and dangerous fog lasting well into the afternoon.
Friday, Terry went out and developed our game plan while Tyson and I spent Friday evening at Goldby Church with a booth at their first Beast Feast. The fellowship and atmosphere were phenomenal.
Saturday morning started out with decent action and we were culling fish by 9am or earlier. We made a big move and caught our biggest of the day, however the bite died off as the day went on. We did finish the day with a good upgrade with ten minutes left. We only managed 58 pounds, but we were left with some great memories!

Brad and his customers have been on a very good crappie bite using jigs. He`s been catching them in huge open water schools and on structure. He also had a spoonbill paddlefish trip and did well on that one also pulling divers.
We both have a few days available this week if anyone wants to take advantage of good fishing and warmer temperatures.
